First Things...
It is truly an incredible honour to have been selected by CMS Ireland to have the opportunity to work in Cairo among the permanent and indeed, transient community in what promises to be a vibrant Cathedral ministry.
When I was first informed of the possibility of a placement in the architecturally striking All Saints Cathedral in Cairo last year it all seemed so very far away, nebulous, and perhaps even a little out of my reach. I had imagined that there would be enormous interest in the position and I didn't dare to seriously consider the possibility that I would be chosen from among so many.
Now, with less than two weeks to go until I fly out of Dublin, it is suddenly very real and pressing!
To have the opportunity to serve Christ, our Church and whomever I come into contact with in my pastoral role, and in a land as old as time itself, seems almost too good to be true.
Nevertheless, time marches on and Cairo draws ever nearer.
I will miss all in Rathfarnham Parish as I travel to pastures new, albeit for a short time. I imagine, however, that those experiences and challenges which lie ahead will be most interesting and encouraging not only to me, but also to them. I face the prospect of serving Christ in Egypt with a full, glad, and open heart.
The cornerstone of ministry has always been the imperative to engage in mission and, although I'm not travelling to the deepest darkest Amazonian rainforest, I imagine that my capabilities will be stretched and my skills challenged, hopefully to the betterment of my faith.
Many years ago, and in another capacity, I was most fortunate to serve with the UN International Police Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP). In this role, I had frequent and positive engagments with the resident Muslim community in North Cyprus.
I am now looking forward to working in ministry with our interfaith partners, and developing new and fruitful relationships, and positive and lasting friendships.
Thank you in advance to all who have supported, and continue to support me, and to those who encouraged me in ministry. Especially to my very own North Star, who has been my Cephas; my rock, and my inspiration.
Tonight, I have my final briefing on what lies ahead, so I guess I'll know more then!
Stay tuned for more news.
Rev. Mike
